There has been a LOT of discussion in our Physio community here in Perth of late about anterior cruciate ligament (ACL - the one in your knee) injuries in kids who havenโ€™t finished growing yet.โฃ
โฃ
So much so, that Nicole, as chair of the WA @physioaustralia Paediatric Committee, got together with the #australianorthopaedicassoication to put on a night of learning & discussionโฃ
โฃ
Michelle one of our awesome senior physios spoke about why kids & teens are different and why you canโ€™t just treat them like an adult ACL.โฃ
โฃ
There was also a super panel of both surgeons and physios to discuss controversies in the research and practice.โฃ
โฃ
So what was the outcome?โฃ
โฃ
Physios, Surgeons and families need to work together to find the best solution for the child.โฃ And every child is different, their growth & development, sports, future ambitions, injuries etc... so there isnโ€™t one answer.
โฃ
Also working with a Physio in the first 12 weeks after your childโ€™s injury to improve strength and control helps us make better decisions and improves outcomes long term. This is termed โ€œprehabโ€ and is important for your childโ€™s physical and psychological wellbeing.

Developing pencil grasps starts a lot younger than you think. It begins when children learn to grasp and release objects such as building blocks, throwing balls and feeding themselves. Young children are not yet strong enough when holding pencils and will often have difficulty stabilising their wrists. This means that drawing and scribbling will look like whole arm movements (drawing from the shoulder). children also prefer chunkier / thicker crayons or textas.โฃ
โฃ
As they get stronger they will show more control from the whole arm, then through the wrist and lastly to the fingers by the age of approx 6 years onwards. โฃ
โฃ
This grasp is a Palmar Supinate grasp, usually developed by the ages of 1-2 years. This grasp is used for scribbling. ๐Ÿ–
