Sports Injuries

Child and adolescent sporting injuries contribute to a large proportion of emergency department cases, and it is the leading cause of injury in the 12-19 year age group. It is vitally important to ensure that child and adolescent injuries are managed appropriately. Our therapists at Western Kids Health have extensive experience in injury prevention, assessment and management across a wide range of sports from the elite to social level. These include:

Western Kids Health is a clinic dedicated to paediatrics. Our therapists understand growth and development and the different conditions and injuries that can occur during this time period.Our therapists are skilled in the assessment of the limping child and can identify when prompt referral for imaging or to a specialist is needed. Injuries commonly seen include:

  • Joint sprains and dislocations
  • Muscle strains
  • Recurrent shoulder dislocations
  • Post fracture management
  • Postural related pain
  • Avulsion fracture
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Concussion (CCMI Accredited Practice)
  • Overuse injuries such as tendinopathy

The management of many of these conditions involves:

  • Education and reassurance around injury healing  and recovery time frames
  • Exercise programs focusing on muscle length, strength, endurance, proprioception/balance and control
  • Graded return to play programs
  • Load management advice
  • Referral to other health professionals and specialists when required

 

Our physiotherapy team is passionate about working with local sporting clubs to prevent injuries. Our physiotherapists have extensive knowledge and training in delivering warm up programs such as FIFA 11+ for Kids  and we are a Netball Australia KNEE Endorsed Provider.
