SCSA Applications for Special Examination Arrangement

Attention Parents of High School Students

Yep, we are only a week in, but we need to talk about final exams!
Tomorrow, schools will receive applications for “special examination arrangements for candidates with a disability sitting ATAR course examinations” for year 12 students.  If your child has a condition that has been diagnosed by a health professional, who states that the condition impacts their ability to complete timed assessments, then this might be relevant to you.

Example diagnoses may include; Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder, Osteogenesis Imperfecta or Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. You might be looking to apply for extra time, rest time, or computer use. This is a discussion you may have been having with your school for a while, and your learning support coordinator may request an occupational therapist report to support your application.

Year 9, 10 and 11 students
If timed assessments are challenging for your child because of a diagnosed condition, it might be a good idea to start planning now. A history of occupational therapy assessments will be valuable in demonstrating that the condition has always presented challenges in school participation. It also gives your child time to engage in groups and interventions that might make it easier for them to complete those assessments.

Application Support

Western Kids Health offers a SCSA application report writing package with an experienced Senior Occupational Therapist. $550 includes:
– Initial appointment
– Detailed Assessment for Speed of Handwriting (DASH)
– Report writing
– Follow up appointment
If you are already engaged with our occupational therapists at Western Kids Health, you will not need an initial appointment (Cost $400)
Tips for your appointment:
– If you know you are going to be applying for special arrangements, talk to your learning coordinator and book an appointment early. The applications are due from school at the start of April. This may give us some time to trial supports and interventions before the application is due.
– Bring information supporting your child’s diagnosis, school reports, information about previous therapy, and handwriting samples to your initial appointment.

Intervention Support

We might also recommend further therapy, including intensive handwriting development or engagement in our TARGiT program. Sometimes, this might be to support your application, but in general they will be designed to develop your child’s skills and coping mechanisms to sit their final exams, regardless of the outcome of your application.
