Infant Physiotherapy:

A 2-Day Course for New Graduates

A practical 2-day intensive for early-career physiotherapists

Presenters: Erin Butler and Nicole Pates

Dates: 10 and 11 September | 9am to 3.30pm

For: New graduates and physiotherapists transitioning into paediatrics (0 to 3 years)

Paediatric infant assessment requires a distinct clinical skill set that undergraduate training rarely covers in depth. This course bridges that gap. Across two days you’ll build the assessment competencies, handling skills and clinical reasoning needed to work confidently with infants and their families.

The program combines theory with substantial hands-on practice. Live practical sessions with infants give you supervised, real-world experience in objective assessment and developmental facilitation, not just observation.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course you’ll be able to:

  • Identify typical motor development across the first two years, including milestone ranges and normal variation, supported by video analysis
  • Conduct a structured infant objective assessment using validated tools
  • Apply facilitation and handling techniques to support motor development
  • Recognise and reason through common presentations: plagiocephaly and torticollis, foot posture variations, hip dysplasia and developmental delay
  • Work effectively within a family-centred, strengths-based model, including communication and collaborative goal setting

Program structure

  • Typical development 0 to 2 years: video examples, milestones and ranges
  • Working in paediatrics: family-centred practice, strengths-based approaches, communication and goal setting
  • Paediatric assessment: assessment tools and a live practical session
  • Common presentations: plagiocephaly/torticollis, foot shape, hip dysplasia, developmental delay
  • Case studies with live and video examples

Practical component

Infants are organised for supervised practice. You’ll perform a complete objective assessment and develop facilitation and handling skills with direct clinician guidance.

There is a maximum of 10 available places for this workshop
